Put the mouse away. Do these in order and tick them off.

  1. Open your site, click the address bar, then press Tab. Each press should put a visible outline or highlight on the next link or button.

The scan can’t see this one; only your eyes can.

  2. Tab through the menu. Dropdowns should open with Enter or show their items. If Tab disappears for a few presses, it’s landing on a closed menu or a hidden slide.

We found this on 23 of 546 local business sites.

  3. Keep pressing Tab until you reach each one, then press Enter. Fill in the form with Tab and typing only, and send it.

  4. On cards with a button inside (a service, a product), Tab should stop once per card, and Enter should go where the card says.

We found this on 13 of 546 local business sites.

  5. A menu, reviews or a table in a small scrolling box: Tab to it and use the arrow keys. If you can’t get in, keyboard users can’t read it.

We found this on 16 of 546 local business sites.

  6. When a cookie banner, newsletter pop-up or chat opens, Tab should reach its buttons and Escape should close it.

48 of the 546 local business websites we scanned in October 2026 had at least one keyboard problem our scan could see. We picked these sites because each had at least one serious issue, so the numbers describe sites with problems, not every site.

Fix what you found

Most of these are one setting or one paste, done once for the whole site.

  • No outline: WordPress, Squarespace, Shopify

Paste a:focus-visible, button:focus-visible, input:focus-visible { outline: 3px solid currentColor; outline-offset: 2px; } where you add custom CSS: WordPress Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS; Squarespace Pages → Custom Code → Custom CSS; Shopify Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Custom CSS.

  • No outline: Wix

Settings → Accessibility Wizard → More actions → Advanced accessibility settings → Visual indicators, and switch it on. Sites made in Wix Studio already have it.

  • No outline: Webflow

Select a link or button, open the state menu in the Style panel, choose Focused (Keyboard) and give it an outline. Then Publish.

  • Tab lands on something hidden

Usually a slideshow or a mobile menu from your theme or a plugin. Update it first; if that doesn’t help, swap it for your builder’s own gallery or menu block.

  • Two stops on one card

Keep one: remove the separate button and let the whole card link, or remove the card link and keep the button.

  • A box you can’t scroll

Remove its fixed height so it shows in full, or ask whoever built it to add tabindex="0" and a name to the box.

The free scan finds hidden things you can Tab to, scroll boxes, faint text, unnamed buttons and more. Then try the 15-minute checklist. Automated scans catch a portion of accessibility issues and are not a legal compliance certification.
