Got an ADA website demand letter?
Don’t ignore it. Find out what is actually wrong with your site.
What the law allows
Under the federal ADA
A private lawsuit can get a court order to fix the barriers, plus the other side’s lawyer fees. The Justice Department’s manual says it does not bring money damages or fines.
In California, money too
State law counts an ADA violation as a violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Act, with damages of at least $4,000 per offense plus lawyer fees. Other states have their own laws.
Lawsuits are common
Plaintiffs filed 3,117 website accessibility lawsuits in federal court in 2025, up 27% from 2024. State court cases are not in that count.

What to do this week
Talk to a lawyer first

Fix them, and keep a record
Most fixes are a setting or a text box in your website builder. Note what you changed and when.
Thinking of a widget as the quick fix? All 80 widget sites we scanned still had problems. More on what the ADA asks of websites.
Or let us fix it

Check your site first
Not legal advice. Automated scans catch a portion of accessibility issues and are not a legal compliance certification. We can’t tell you how to answer a letter; a lawyer can.
