What to fix on Shopify, most common first

We scanned 27 Shopify business sites. Run the free scan above to see which of these your site has, and exactly where.

  1. Text too faint to read

120 of 27 Shopify sitesChecked in the $149 fix

Light grey on white, or white on a pale photo. Hard to read for older customers and anyone on a phone in sunlight.

    1. Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Colors. Edit the color scheme used by the section the scan names.
    2. Darken text and button text, or lighten the background. On white, #767676 is the lightest grey that passes.
    3. Sale badges and text over banner images are common offenders; check those first.
  2. Links with no name

214 of 27 Shopify sitesThe free scan checks this

Icon links (Facebook, Instagram, the phone icon, the logo) that a screen reader announces as just “link”.

    1. Usually a linked logo, banner image or icon with no text.
    2. Images: give them alt text naming where the link goes (Content → Files → click the image → alt text, or in the section where you added it).
    3. Icons in custom code or an app: add aria-label="…" to the link, or ask the app’s developer to.
  3. Photos without descriptions

38 of 27 Shopify sitesThe free scan checks this

Images with no text alternative, so screen readers skip them or read out a file name.

    1. Products → open a product → click a photo → Add alt text.
    2. Describe what a shopper needs to know (“Navy linen shirt, front view”), not the file name.
  4. Zoom blocked on phones

46 of 27 Shopify sitesThe free scan checks this

A setting that stops people pinching to zoom in on prices, hours and small print.

    1. Your theme tells phones not to allow zoom.
    2. Online Store → Themes → (…) → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid. Find the line with name="viewport" and delete maximum-scale=1 and user-scalable=no. Save.
    3. Not comfortable editing code? This is a one-line change any Shopify developer can make.
  5. Buttons with no name

54 of 27 Shopify sitesThe free scan checks this

Menu, search and close buttons that are only an icon and are announced as just “button”.

    1. Icon-only buttons (search, cart, menu, close) need a label.
    2. First check Online Store → Themes for a theme update; newer versions often fix these. Buttons from apps or custom code need aria-label="…".

From our own scans of local US business websites in October 2026, grouped by the website builder each one uses. We picked these sites because each had at least one serious issue, so the numbers describe sites with problems, not every site. Menu names change now and then; if a step doesn’t match what you see, the free scan still shows exactly which element to fix. How Shopify compares with other builders.
