Give every icon link a name

Paste a link’s code. See what a screen reader says.

In Chrome or Edge, right-click the icon → Inspect, then right-click the highlighted line → Copy → Copy outerHTML. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

A screen reader says: “Link”, or the web address read out

  • Change No name. Screen reader users hear only “link”, or the web address read out.

Name it “Facebook”. In code, the first line becomes:

<a aria-label="Facebook" href="https://www.facebook.com/rosasbakery" class="social-icon">

The most common problem after faint text

303 of the 546 local business websites we scanned had links with no name: 1,700 in all, a median of 4 per site. Most were linked photos and logos, then social icons, menu buttons and phone icons.

From our own scans in October 2026. We picked these sites because each had at least one serious issue, so the numbers describe sites with problems, not every site.

Name it after where it goes

  • Facebook or Instagram icon

    “Facebook”, “Instagram”

  • Phone icon

    “Call (215) 555-0134”

  • Logo that goes to the home page

    “Home”, or your business name

  • Photo that opens a service page

    The service: “Teeth whitening”

  • Three-line menu button

    “Menu”

  • Arrow back up the page

Where to type it

  • WordPress

Social Icons block: click each icon and fill in its label (for example “Facebook”).

  • Squarespace

Linked image block: edit the block and fill in the image alt text field with where the link goes (“Book a table”, “Home”).

  • Wix

Linked images and icons: click the image → Settings → fill in “What’s in the image? Tell Google”. Wix reads that text out, so name where the link goes.

  • Shopify

Images: give them alt text naming where the link goes (Content → Files → click the image → alt text, or in the section where you added it).

  • Webflow

In the Designer, select the link block → Element settings (the cog) → Custom attributes → add one named aria-label with a value such as “Instagram” or “Home”.

Find every link that needs one

The free scan lists each unnamed link on your home page and suggests a name. Photos need a description too. Automated scans catch a portion of accessibility issues and are not a legal compliance certification.
