What to fix on Squarespace, most common first

We scanned 71 Squarespace business sites. Run the free scan above to see which of these your site has, and exactly where.

  1. Text too faint to read

153 of 71 Squarespace sitesChecked in the $149 fix

Light grey on white, or white on a pale photo. Hard to read for older customers and anyone on a phone in sunlight.

    1. Open Site Styles (the paintbrush icon) → Colors, then click the color theme used by the section the scan names.
    2. Darken the paragraph, heading and button text colors, or lighten the background. On white, #767676 is the lightest grey that passes.
    3. Text over a photo: pick a darker photo for that section, or move the text onto a plain background.
  2. Links with no name

235 of 71 Squarespace sitesThe free scan checks this

Icon links (Facebook, Instagram, the phone icon, the logo) that a screen reader announces as just “link”.

    1. These are usually images or icons set as links with no text.
    2. Linked image block: edit the block and fill in the image alt text field with where the link goes (“Book a table”, “Home”).
    3. Icons added in a Code block: add a label to the link, for example <a href="…" aria-label="Instagram">.
  3. Photos without descriptions

37 of 71 Squarespace sitesThe free scan checks this

Images with no text alternative, so screen readers skip them or read out a file name.

    1. Edit the image block and fill in the image alt text field.
    2. Describe what the photo shows that matters to a customer, in a few words.
  4. Links shown only by color

44 of 71 Squarespace sitesChecked in the $149 fix

Links inside paragraphs that differ from the text only by color, so people with color blindness miss them.

    1. Links inside paragraphs need more than a color change to stand out.
    2. Add this in Custom CSS (Pages → Custom Code → Custom CSS, or Design → Custom CSS on older sites): p a { text-decoration: underline; }
  5. Buttons with no name

54 of 71 Squarespace sitesThe free scan checks this

Menu, search and close buttons that are only an icon and are announced as just “button”.

    1. Every button needs visible text or a label. Squarespace’s own button blocks use their text, so make sure none are blank.
    2. Icon-only buttons added with code need aria-label="…" on the button.

From our own scans of local US business websites in October 2026, grouped by the website builder each one uses. We picked these sites because each had at least one serious issue, so the numbers describe sites with problems, not every site. Menu names change now and then; if a step doesn’t match what you see, the free scan still shows exactly which element to fix. How Squarespace compares with other builders.
