Fix your WordPress site’s accessibility.
The problems we find most on WordPress sites, and where to click to fix each one.
What to fix on WordPress, most common first
We scanned 242 WordPress business sites. Run the free scan above to see which of these your site has, and exactly where.
Text too faint to read
Light grey on white, or white on a pale photo. Hard to read for older customers and anyone on a phone in sunlight.
- Block themes: Appearance → Editor → Styles → Colors. Classic themes: Appearance → Customize → Colors.
- Darken body text and button text. On a white background,
#767676is the lightest grey that passes; darker is better. - Using Elementor, Divi or another page builder? Colors are set per section: open the section the scan names and change it there.
Links with no name
Icon links (Facebook, Instagram, the phone icon, the logo) that a screen reader announces as just “link”.
- These are usually social icons, a phone icon or a linked logo.
- Social Icons block: click each icon and fill in its label (for example “Facebook”).
- Linked logo or image: give the image alt text that names where it goes, such as “Home” or your business name.
- Icons added by a theme or page builder: look for a label or “aria-label” field on the icon; if there isn’t one, send the scan to whoever built the site.
Untitled maps and widgets
Embedded maps, booking and review widgets with no title, so screen reader users can’t tell what they are.
- Embedded Google Maps, booking and review widgets need a short title.
- Open the block that holds the embed (often a Custom HTML block) and add a title inside the iframe tag, for example
<iframe title="Map to our office" …>. - Maps added by a plugin: look in the plugin’s settings for a title or label field.
Zoom blocked on phones
A setting that stops people pinching to zoom in on prices, hours and small print.
- Your theme tells phones not to allow zoom.
- Check the theme’s settings (Appearance → Customize, or the theme’s own options page) for “disable pinch zoom” or “mobile zoom” and turn the block off.
- No setting? Ask your developer to remove
maximum-scale=1anduser-scalable=nofrom the viewport line in the theme’s header. It is a one-line change.
Photos without descriptions
Images with no text alternative, so screen readers skip them or read out a file name.
- Media → Library → click the image → fill in Alternative Text.
- Or, in the editor, select the image block and fill in Alternative text in the sidebar.
- Describe what matters (“Our front desk on Main Street”). Purely decorative images can stay empty.
From our own scans of local US business websites in October 2026, grouped by the website builder each one uses. We picked these sites because each had at least one serious issue, so the numbers describe sites with problems, not every site. Menu names change now and then; if a step doesn’t match what you see, the free scan still shows exactly which element to fix. How WordPress compares with other builders.
